Examples of Memorial Projects

Examples of Projects Started by Families in Memory of Children:

There are thousands of examples of projects initiated by families in memory of a child. We list here a just a few examples. Some have chosen to memorialize together with countering the darkness that surrounded their death. Others saw a need in the community and tried to fill it in memory of their child. Others have chosen ways that represent their child’s interests.

I Miss My Baby: Pnina Rosenstark, after the loss of her infant son, wrote a children’s book about loss. The book is meant to help families and schools discuss child loss with children. http://inourheartsproject.com/recommended-books/childrens-books/my-shoshana/

 

The Jonah Maccabee Foundation was founded in memory of Jonah Macabbee Dreskin. It helps young people build whole, healthy lives and runs a yearly memorial concert.  https://www.jonahmac.org/

 

In memory of Gilad Shaar, each year families, schools, and institutions, bake cookies and cakes and share them with others. 

 

 

Shai Layeladim, a website which teaches Torah (in Hebrew) for children through creative educational games, was started by the Kroizer family in memory of their two sons that were killed. https://shayleyeladim.org.il/

 

Sherri and Seth Mandell started a camp in Israel to help victims of terror in memory of their son Koby who was killed by terrorists. https://www.kobymandell.org/

As a response to the murder of their son in the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, the family of Alex Schachter began Safe Schools for Alex to spearhead a nationwide campaign for safer schools. https://safeschoolsforalex.org

 

The family of Malka Chana Roth, murdered in the Sbarro bombing in Jerusalem, began Keren Malki in her memory. Keren Malki empowers families of children with severe disabilities in Israel to keep the children within their family home instead of living in institutions.  https://kerenmalki.org

 

 Rachel’s Challenge – Started by a family in whose daughter was the first victim of the Columbine massacre. The goal is to combat bullying in schools which contributed to their daughter’s death.
